Running in Spiti’s cold, high-altitude environment requires smart layering and the right gear. Dressing correctly will help you stay warm, dry, and comfortable while maintaining performance throughout the race.
Layering Essentials

Base Layer (Moisture Control)

  • Reach Kaza at least 3–4 days before race day to let your body settle into the altitude
  • If possible, ascend gradually with stops at lower-altitude towns like Reckong Peo or Tabo
  • Take it easy during your first 24–48 hours—rest is crucial

Mid Layer (Insulation)

  • Fleece or lightweight insulated jacket
  • Thermal tights or leggings
  • Helps trap body heat in colder stretches

Outer Layer (Protection)

  • Windproof jacket or hooded shell
  • Water-resistant outerwear
  • Protects against strong winds and sudden weather changes
Must-Have Accessories

  • Layer smartly: Start slightly cool—you’ll warm up as you run
  • Acclimatize early: Spend 2–3 days adjusting to altitude before race day
  • Stay hydrated: Drink regularly, even if you don’t feel thirsty
  • Protect exposed skin: Use sunscreen and lip balm to prevent dryness
  • Warm up properly: Cold conditions can tighten muscles quickly
  • Run responsibly: Pace yourself and listen to your body at high altitude
